A showdown is looming at the Nakuru County Assembly after some ward representatives rejected the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party's decision to appoint Keringet MCA William Mutai as the new Majority Leader. The MCAs allied with Mosop Ward Representative Alex Lagat, who was recently impeached, have vowed to block the party’s communication in the assembly on Tuesday.

Speaking to the press on Monday November 25, 2024, at the assembly precincts, the Members of County Assembly (MCAs) accused United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary-General Hassan Omar of unfair treatment, alleging that he sided with the opposing faction.

Led by Naivasha MCA Alex Mbugua, the aggrieved MCAs claimed the party failed to resolve the dispute amicably and instead took a partisan stance.According to Mr. Mbugua, the party allowed Assembly Chief Whip Fadhili Msuri, an ally of Mr. Mutai, to preside over the election and announce the results during a meeting convened at the party headquarters in Nairobi.

“We had requested that both Alex Lagat and William Mutai step aside so that a new leader could be elected. However, Mr. Omar chose sides by allowing the whip to preside over the election,” said Mr. Mbugua. He added that the party demonstrated bias, and they would not accept the results in the assembly.

Naivasha's Maela West Ward Representative Francis Kuria also stated that all MCAs opposing Mr. Lagat’s ouster are ready to face off against the decision.Mr. Kuria vowed to mobilize other ward representatives to reject any communication from the party in the assembly, arguing that the party should have proposed a neutral candidate for the position.

“We will not be intimidated into tabling motions on the main floor. If they think this is a joke, let them try tomorrow, and they will face us,” said Mr. Kuria. The impeached Majority Leader Alex Lagat supported the idea of both him and Mr. Mutai stepping aside to allow the party to make an impartial decision.

On the other hand, the opposing faction, led by Chief Whip Fadhili Msuri, dismissed these claims, insisting the process will proceed as planned to communicate the party’s decision.Mr. Msuri urged the disgruntled faction to seek legal action if they were unhappy with the outcome.

“We all presented our cases to the party and were fairly heard. However, we will not allow them to stall the assembly’s business. If they feel aggrieved, they should appeal the matter in court,” said Mr. Msuri.

Deputy Whip Leah Serem added that during the Nairobi meeting, her boss, the Majority Whip, took full control of the process and left no room for transparency.

“When we were in Nairobi, we expected the party to propose a new leader. However, my boss, the Majority Whip, chaired the meeting, presided over the election, and even counted the votes. He controlled everything, and, in fact, there was no voting,” said Ms. Serem.
