The President was addressing the nation on interventions in Agriculture and the issues affecting the sector on August 2, 2023 in State House, Nairobi.

Ruto highlighted the hiked sugar prices as well as the confusion surrounding the sugarcane sector. He noted that there was no cane to harvest, and companies had temporarily closed shop, leaving farmers with no source of income.

The President acknowledged that the government had been reluctant to allow the importation of sugar into the country.

“We have been reluctant to work against farmers by opening importation because it has sometimes been used to destroy sugar farming,” said the President.

However, he announced that the government had given licenses to import sugar into the country. He assured the nation that by mid-month, there would be an improvement in the sugar situation in the country.

“In two weeks from now, we will expect importation of sugar into the country, “Ruto added.

The President revealed they had consulted with stakeholders as part of the government's commitment to sorting out the sugar sub-sector. He announced that they now had a comprehensive plan to sort out the sugar sub-sector and ensure that it serves the interests of farmers and consumers.
