Kabarak University has rolled out a 2-year (6 trimesters) Master of Pharmacy in Oncology Pharmacy (MPharm). This supplements the already thriving Departments under School of Pharmacy, namely; Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy, Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmaceutics, and Department of Pre-Clinical (Pharmacy).


Oncology is an extension of medicine that specializes in the analysis and treatment of people with, or suspected to have cancer. This diverse field is further broken down into palliative care, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, and other procedures applied in cancer treatment.

Several Universities in Kenya offer Oncology studies. University of Nairobi (UoN) and Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) have taken it a notch with their Programmes including a Master of Medicine and Radiation Oncology, and a Master in Clinical Medicine (Oncology), respectively.

Kabarak University, School of Pharmacy, has joined this path towards acquiring a cure for cancer completely. Through the Institution’s stringent application of practical training, the practitioners disseminated into the health sector will hence provide the best possible care to patients with the disease.

Dr. Titus Suge, Dean, School of Pharmacy, has painted the picture describing the aptitude of the Institution in this specific pedagogy, noting, “A profession today is defined by more than its ability to deliver facts and knowledge on demand. That is why at Kabarak School of Pharmacy, we endeavor to offer high quality education and training that will prepare skilled, ethical and professional experts in the field of Pharmacy.”

The School has assumed an excelling graph since its establishment in August 2016, with the application of a case-based teaching, problem-based learning and practical implementation. This has fostered an integrated, comprehensive body of knowledge and skills through self-directed active learning methods.

Dr. Titus additionally illuminates the four-way criteria of training that puts the student, the educator, the practitioner and patient, all on the same page. This, therefore, aligns the academic, scientific and theoretical knowledge with practical expertise, warranting proficiency not only in theoretical terms but also in practical application.

The University has cemented the credibility of the pharmacy tutorship by forging partnerships with Hospitals, Community Pharmacies, Pharmaceutical Industries and Research Institutions.

Following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the International Cancer Institute (ICI) in 2021, Kabarak University took pride in being the first institution of higher learning in the sub-Saharan Africa to roll out programmes in Oncology Pharmacy.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Henry Kiplagat, during the partnership event with ICI, foresaw that the merge would warrant world-class education and training in oncology therefore eliminating the need to seek oncology services abroad.

“With time, our partnership with ICI will be extended to offer programmes in palliative care and oncology as well as collaboration in biomedical sciences,” he said.

In order to acquire eligibility to pursue the Master of Pharmacy in Oncology Programme, on top of submitting a well detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV), one ought to be a holder of a Bachelor of Pharmacy Degree from Kabarak University, or its equivalents from any other University recognized by the Commission for University Education (CUE).

In addition to possessing academic proficiency, a candidate is required to be registered or meets the requirements for registration as a pharmacist by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB), additionally, one ought to pass an admission examination and interview administered by the School of Pharmacy admission committee.

The University has welcomed the international community with applicants being required to have their Transcripts/certificates verified and appraised by CUE.

Moreover, those from non-English speaking countries should provide evidence of a knack in English. Transcripts and/or certificates written in a language other than English must be submitted with a certified translation into English accompanied by the equation from the Commission for University Education (CUE).

The Programme will be administered in the Main Campus.
