However, as their manager Arteta hinted, Arsenal are also in the race for Mbappe. "Why not? If we want to be the best team, we are going to need the best talent and the best players. I am not involved maybe Edu and the owners are. I'm not in those conversations until the last stage," Arteta said when asked if the Gunners were in for Mbappe.

Former Arsenal legend Henry was more cautious about Mbappe's destination. "Where he is going no one knows, everyone thinks he is going to be in one place," Henry told CBS Sports.

Sky Sports News chief reporter Kaveh Solhekol revealed the details of Mbappe's departure from PSG. "As far as PSG are concerned, they knew this was coming. Mbappe had an option to extend his contract by another season.

"He told them last season he wasn't going to do that,” Solhekol said.

PSG will save £180m yearly on his salary and bonuses and move on from the saga.

"Everybody knows Real Madrid want to sign him. He's been in talks with Real for a long time because since January he's been able to talk to other clubs as he's out of contract this summer," Solhekol added.

"Our information is that Real are prepared to make him the highest-paid player in history but there is no way a club even as big as Real can afford to pay him the kind of money he was earning at PSG. The talks have dragged on for so long because they have had to agree as he's going to take a wage cut. The first step in the process is he has told PSG he is leaving and they have acknowledged that," Solhekol added.
