Economy Profile

In Laikipia West, the economy blends commercial agribusiness, small-scale farmers growing a variety of crops, and pastoral livestock rearing. The main food basket of Laikipia County is also the area with the greatest geographic diversity. The major economic activities are summarised as follows:

Mixed crop farming: Production of maize, wheat, potatoes, and horticultural products is very high in fertile areas such as Marmanet and Igwamiti.

Livestock production: Along with dairy ranching, beef production is also widely practised.

Urban commercial trade: Retailing, construction, real estate, and financial services are the fastest-growing sectors, driven by Rumuruti's status as the capital.

Ecotourism: Conservation initiatives led and supported by communities, and eco-tourism habitats of ranches, though at a small level, are very promising.

Development Priority Areas:

Smart Towns-Infrastructure Plan: Improving concrete urban footpaths, paving main roads, and increasing storm drainage networks in Rumuruti Township.

Strategic Transport Links: The completion of the KSh 3 billion Rumuruti–Naibor–Kisima transit highway expansion and works on the Sipili–Ol Moran farming corridors are the focus.

Water and Irrigation Security: Fast-tracking the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) launch of Rumuruti Dam and Water Supply Project, which will increase its storage capacity to 0.87 million cubic meters (MCM).

Rangeland Peace and Conflict Resolution: Developing a set of policy guidelines for local authorities aimed at resolving interpersonal differences arising from the use of grazing lands and water access points by sedentary agriculturalists and migratory pastoralists during dry spells.

Educational Expansion: Funding from NG-CDF will be used to modernise high schools, expand technical-vocational centres, and provide local bursaries.

Political Behaviour

Laikipia West has traditionally supported parties associated with the national government, moving from TNA in 2013 to the Jubilee Party in 2017 and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in 2022. While party affiliation strongly influences voting patterns, local elections are also shaped by candidates' track records, development agendas, and their ability to address issues such as roads, agriculture, water supply, education, and security.

Political competition is generally peaceful, with voters placing significant emphasis on service delivery and development, helping UDA maintain a strong presence across most elected positions in the constituency.
