Beryl Achieng Odinga passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, while receiving treatment at Nairobi West Hospital. She was the youngest sibling in the prominent Odinga family, daughter of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga and Mary Ajuma Odinga.
Unlike some of her siblings, Beryl avoided frontline politics and chose a quieter public life. According to President William Ruto, she made her mark as an exceptional urban planner in Zimbabwe in the 1980s, where her expertise and commitment contributed to transformative urban development.
Beryl eventually returned to Kenya and continued serving in public institutions. In 2020, she joined the board of the Nairobi Water and Sewerage Company (NWSC) and rose to become its chairperson. She was also the wife of the late Otieno Ambala, who briefly served as Member of Parliament P for Gem before his death in 1985. Together, they had three children: Ami Auma, Chizi, and Taurai.
Her passing forced Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Leader and her brother, to cut short his trip to Dubai to oversee burial arrangements. Mourning his sister, he said: “It is with heavy hearts, yet in humble acceptance of God’s will, that we announce the sudden passing of Beryl Achieng Odinga, my sister.”
ODM released a statement describing her as a hardworking and dedicated public servant who deliberately chose to live away from the glare of cameras. The party noted that her death came only 40 days after the loss of Raila Odinga, deepening the family’s grief.
President William Ruto praised her as a trailblazer and intellectual, commending her professional journey across Africa and her leadership at NWSC. “We mourn the loss of a great intellectual and a pioneering woman who opened doors and lit the path for many career women,” he said.
Furthermore, Mombasa Governor Abdulswammad Nassir extended sympathy on behalf of ODM supporters, calling her “beloved, a cherished sibling” and highlighting her“grace, warmth, and quiet strength.”
Her body was transferred to Lee Funeral Home, where public figures gathered to pay their respects and console the Odinga family.
