• Women who were in the defunct women service cops and other veterans came together and started an association called Female of Valour association Kenya (FVAK) its vision being ‘Together as Female veterans, unarmed but dependable, greater than yesterday’ and its mission is to be the lead platform, uniting, empowering, grading and aiding female veterans in Kenya.

In 1971, Women Service Corps (WSC) was created to replace Women Royal Service Corp (WRAC) which was a remnant of the colonial government. WSC gave the females a chance to also serve in the military but unlike their male counterparts they were not allowed to raise families or have kids.

Whenever one was found to be expectant the lady could be dismissed under ‘service no longer required’. They had rules that one had to adhere to and when broken severe punishment was given. Dismissal stories always remained unheard. Such rules included being subjected to random bed checks in one night so as to ascertain the presence of each and every member in the barracks.

The rule of remaining in celibacy while serving in WSC was difficult to many, some had to do abortions or deliver in secrecy so as to avoid losing their jobs.

In 1999 hope was found when WSC was disbanded and the serving women were moved to various organs in the Kenya Army, Kenya Navy and Kenya Air Force. The action made the members of the WSC very thankful to the then Major General Daudi Tonje who had helped in making it happen.

Several years have passed and many women have been able to join the Military enjoying same privileges their male counterparts.

Women who were in the defunct women service cops and other veterans came together and started an association called Female of Valour association Kenya (FVAK) its vision being ‘Together as Female veterans, unarmed but dependable, greater than yesterday’ and its mission is to be the lead platform, uniting, empowering, grading and aiding female veterans in Kenya.

There numerous objectives revolve around the welfare of ex-service women and retired women officers.

On April 15, 2023, the association visited RTD General Daudi Tonje to thank him for his help years ago. They also gained his support and he accepted to be their patron. The group continue to spread love to old retired female veterans and receive support and love from all soldiers and people all over the continent for their hard work.
