Kabarak University has announced the introduction of the fully online, 8-semester Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Data Science and Analytics. This has been occasioned by the institution’s commitment to cultivating a responsible approach to data usage while fostering a data-driven decision-making mindset in learners.
The institution has expressed a deep-rooted assurance in imparting practical knowledge and skills across key areas of data science and analytics. This has, over time, enabled students to use data for strategic decision-making, adequately grooming them for the competitive job market.
The B.Sc. in Data Science and Analytics is delivered under an up-to-the-minute curriculum which covers a broad range of areas, including database management systems, scientific computing, statistical modeling, artificial intelligence, machine learning, business intelligence, data mining, warehousing, and data security.
Operating within the School of Science Engineering and Technology, the tutorship of this programme is guided by the School’s vision “To become a modern, locally and internationally recognized, centre of excellence in teaching and research in ICT and applied sciences.”
Prof. Peter Rugiri, Dean of the School of Science Engineering and Technology, has expressed faith in the excellence within the School, saying, “The School is committed to offering competitive market-driven courses to ensure employability of our graduates.”

He has further underscored an impressive success rate of 90% employability of the graduates. “Approximately 90% of our graduates have already secured jobs, with a very good number of them gaining promotions shortly after starting work. Most of our graduates secure these jobs before they finish their degree programmes, during their internship periods,” he notes.
As if not enough, the School has embraced the Government of Kenya’s long-term national development vision (Vision 2030) as its primary focus. This is bound to the fact that science and technology have been identified as crucial pillars that will help achieve the Kenya Vision 2030, a move that will help elevate the country to a middle-class economy.
Following the School’s reliable and dedicated faculty, the Head of the Department (HoD), Computer Science and Information Technology, Dr Laura Limo, expresses confidence, saying, “Our department has a total of 22 full-time faculty who are professionals, some with international experience having studied and worked in some of the best universities within and outside Kenya.”
She has additionally promised excellence as the programs herein are tailor-made to prepare graduates who ought to become security experts, data analysts and scientists, IS managers, IT consultants, and software developers. This aligns with the Department’s goal to position graduates as key contributors within the Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies (4IRs), which include Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things (IoT), Robotics, Data Analytics using open-source technologies and many more.
Kabarak University’s School of Science, Engineering & Technology has promised graduates an array of benefits upon successfully completing the B.Sc. in Data Science and Analytics programme. These include the demonstration of a solid understanding of global issues relevant to data analytics, the application of ethical, moral, and social values when enhancing and disseminating knowledge in data science to society, and strengthening critical thinking and problem-solving abilities in applied statistics, among others.
Candidates wishing to study the BSc. Data Science and Analytics programme must satisfy at least one of the following minimum requirements for admission:
Be a holder of KCSE (or equivalent examination) certificate with a minimum aggregate of C+ and a minimum of C+ in both Mathematics and English or Kiswahili, or KNEC Diploma in Data Science, Computer science /Information Technology /Business Information Technology or its equivalent from an Accredited and Recognized Institution, or Kabarak Diploma in Computer Science /Information Technology (Equivalent to KNEC Diploma).
Interested candidates should also have the Kenya Certificate of Education (KCE), East African Certificate of Education (EACE) "Ordinary Level" Division II or their equivalents, plus a KABU/KNEC Diploma or their equivalents from an Accredited and Recognized Institution, or The Kenya Certificate of Education (KCE), East African Certificate of Education (EACE) Ordinary Level Division III or their equivalents, plus KABU/KNEC Certificate and KABU/KNEC Diploma or their equivalents from an Accredited and Recognized Institution, or The Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE)" Advanced Level" with two Principal passes and a subsidiary.
