The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) National Executive Committee (NEC) has relieved Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna from his position as the party’s Secretary General and appointed Catherine Omanyo as the Acting Secretary General.

The decision comes amid growing divergent views within the party leadership. Sifuna has been at the forefront of condemning ODM leaders who have joined the government under the broad-based arrangement, creating visible rifts within the party.

In recent weeks, Sifuna has maintained a firm position against any move to support President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election. Speaking during a national television interview and in an excerpt shared on his Facebook page on February 3, 2026 Sifuna stated:

“The party has not made any decision to support William Ruto in 2027. This is why the central committee said they will talk with different political formations; that is the position of the party. I still would not support him; nobody can compel me to vote for William Ruto. I simply do not see a path to power for William Ruto.”

His remarks underscored the deep divisions within ODM, particularly between leaders advocating for engagement with the government and those insisting the party should maintain a firm opposition stance.

As the developments unfold, attention now turns to ODM’s top leadership on how it will address the internal rifts and chart the party’s political direction moving forward.
