No More Stones, Just My Phone, Gen Zs Shaping the Future

The recent demonstrations of Generation Z in Kenya represent a significant and transformative shift in the socio-political landscape. This youthful demographic has emerged as a powerful force advocating for change. The way and direction of the action have diversified from the traditional way of stones to smartphones, with no apparent leader yet fiery and dangerous.

These millennia's activism is driven by a deep frustration with the status quo, which encompasses unemployment, corruption, and injustice. Raised in an era of social media, Gen Z has greatly adapted and utilized digital platforms like Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, and WhatsApp statuses.

This has been one of the most striking aspects of the demonstration, indicating the power of digitization and technology. Digital involvement facilitates real-time coordination and brings attention to the international level, exerting pressure on the government.

Generation Z has been written as its own watchdog of the government. It has taken the role of the opposition in the country. The extent to which these youths can go remains uncertain.

The elephant in the room is the hashtag Reject the Finance Bill. The efforts seemed to bear fruit following the few amendments to the bill that removed 16 Percent VAT on bread, transportation of sugar, financial services, and 2.5 per cent on motor vehicle tax.

The few amendments have not quenched the fury but fueled the activism. The youths have hit the road and cannot be ignored anymore. It is the start of a revolution. Moreover, Gen Z's demands are not superficial; they are calling for substantial systemic change.

Issues like police brutality, heavy use of tear gas and arrests cannot silence the voices. The police are trying to scatter the protests in the name of 'doing their job', yet the fight is for all, including them.

Gen Zs are known for being keyboard lovers, and their skills are now put into practice. Online coordination and information sharing are fast, real-time, and unmatched. The unity to deride the finance bill is a story of an overly used donkey whose bones are crying for help.

The government must uphold the significance of these demonstrations. They mark a pivotal moment in Kenya's history as youths are not just inheriting the future but shaping it. Their passion offers a beacon for a more democratic and fair society.
