Allan Wetungu is the newest journalist in town, proving the power of talent.

The second-year student at Kabarak University, Department of Mass Communication, has won Radio 47’s Nakuru Talent Search show, placing him in the spotlight.

He is now stepping into one of the most influential radio stations in the country, spanning 47 counties and having over 30 frequencies.

In July, Radio 47 announced that it was looking for talented individuals in Nakuru, an opportunity that Allan Wetungu saw as a stepping stone into his future as a journalist.

“Think you have the voice and talent to keep Nakuru informed? Radio 47 is searching for you. Seize this chance to land your dream job!” the announcement read.

According to Wetungu, the chance to work at the station while still a student is a plus. The financial compensation he will receive will help ease some of his financial constraints.

"Thank you very much for choosing me as the winner and ensuring that I got this opportunity. I will make sure that I report truthfully. I am very grateful because this opportunity will greatly help me as a student to pay my school fees, as it has been a big challenge,” he said after being announced the winner.

Successful media personalities and journalists also started their careers through talent show opportunities. One notable example is Edith Kimani, who entered the journalism limelight when she was only 19, becoming the youngest ever top journalist to grace the Kenyan screens in 2009.

Edith Kimani participated in a talent show by KTN for aspiring journalists called The Presenter, eventually emerging at the top of the competition. She was later hired as a news anchor when the show ended.

Edith Kimani currently works as a news anchor and reporter at the German international broadcasting service Deutsche Welle (DW).

Kamene Goro, who initially studied law, is another example of the power of talent.

She joined the journalism industry in her third year on campus when she got a chance to do a screen test on TV. At 21 years old, she was a prime-time news anchor and presenter.
