As the United Kingdom’s most pivotal election came to a close on Friday July 5, 2024, an ‘American’ feeling of the ‘4th of July’ swept across Britain as the Tories 14-year rule came to a brutal end.
The elections, which saw over 650 constituencies vote for their members of parliament, ended with a triumph for the Labour Party, clearing the required 326 seats before sunrise Friday.
“We did it, you campaigned for it, you fought for it, voted for it, and now it has arrived. Change begins now!” said Keir Starmer, Labour Party Leader and British Prime Minister-to-be, in his victory speech.
The Labour win was predicted given the Conservative party’s record in tax increases, the failure of the NHS under it's rule, and it's approach to border security and immigration. Rishi Sunak, incumbent Conservative Prime Minister, was also previously accused of being so rich and out of touch with the ordinary British citizen.
As Polling came to a close on Thursday night, the Exit poll predicted an early win for Labour, which has garnered more than 400 seats compared to 2019’s 202 and Conservative's current 111.
Starmer, the new occupant at 10 Downing Street, has promised to end party politics with his catchphrase ‘Country First, Party Second.’
The Labour Party, known for its socialist ideologies in the distribution of wealth and favour of government intervention in the economy, has promised to restore Britain to the service of the working people.
“Our task is nothing less than renewing the ideas that hold this country together, National renewal. Whoever you are, wherever you started in life, if you work hard, if you play by the rules, this country should give you a fair chance to get on, it should always respect your contribution, and we have to restore that,” said Starmer.
