Locals of the Bahati constituency, Nakuru, are among the first citizens to witness the actualization of the Boma Yangu Affordable Housing Program. This was launched in 2017 as one of the crucial pillars of the ‘Big Four Agenda’ spearheaded by former president Uhuru Kenyatta. President Ruto has progressed on this plan with an aim to construct 1,000,000 houses nationwide by 2027.

This program aims to provide as many Kenyans with the privilege of safe, secure and cost-effective home ownership, with a registration fee of as low as kshs 200 for enrollment.

Elkana Kusoi, the site manager at Bahati, mentioned that the project has nine blocks, translating to 220 units. These houses are divided into four sizes: studio (bedsitters), one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom. They all have varying prices, ranging from Kshs 700,000 to Kshs 2.8 million, respectively, and require a 10% deposit to move in.

“This is a 12-month project that kicked off August last year and it is anticipated to be completed by September 2024. It will surely change the landscape of this area for the better,” he said.

He added that the program has benefitted more than 5000 residents so far. Regarding employment, the Juakali sector has been favoured as a local enterprise, Great Rift Welders, has secured a contract under this project to supply building materials for door and window frames. This has precipitated the employment of more than 100 residents.

The County Director of Housing, Nakuru, Mr Henry Ondieki, included the already pilling up project advantages, that it would accelerate the area’s local economy. He hinted at similar upcoming projects in Karagita, Gilgil, and Njoro.

Moreover, Mr. Ondieki notified that the plan is intended to construct over 10,000 houses across the county.

“We can attest to the fact that this project is a game changer to Bahati people. The building materials and even human labor is sourced from around here. The President has also confirmed that this is just the beginning as plans for phase two are underway,” he alluded.
