A recent survey conducted by the Media Council of Kenya has uncovered significant insights into media consumption habits across the country, highlighting the dominance of radio in rural areas.

According to the study, radio captures 78% of the population in these regions, making it the preferred medium of choice for staying informed and entertained.

Among the various radio stations, Radio Citizen emerged as the frontrunner, with 22% of the population tuning in. This was closely followed by Radio Jambo at 14% and Radio Maisha at 11%.

The survey also revealed that the majority of radio listeners spend between 1 to 2 hours per day engaging with their preferred stations. The peak listening hours were observed to be between 6 am and 9 am in the morning, while the least engagement was noted between 10 pm and 12 am.

The survey showcased a diverse range of radio stations that enjoy popularity among listeners. Milele FM, Radio47, Inooro FM, Classic 105, Ramogi FM, Kameme FM, Radio Taifa, Kiss 100, Musyi FM, KBC English Service, Kass FM, Mulembe FM, Star FM, Egesa FM, and NRG Radio were among the stations preferred by significant portions of the population.

News emerged as the primary motivation for radio consumption, with audiences relying on it as a trusted source of information. In rural areas, where access to other media platforms may be limited, FM radio receivers play a vital role in keeping communities connected and informed.
