President William Ruto has made several notable promotions within the military, including the elevation of Lt-Gen Charles Muriu Kahariri to the esteemed rank of General and his appointment as the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).

This announcement comes in the aftermath of the helicopter crash that led to the demise of the former Chief of Defence Forces, General Francis Ogolla, on April 18, 2024.

The air accident occurred in the Sindar area of Kaben location, Tot division, Elgeyo Marakwet County; regrettably, General Ogolla and 11 other military personnel were aboard the Kenya Airforce Huey Helicopter, resulting in the loss of nine lives. Two individuals survived the crash.

Additionally, President Ruto has made other key promotions within the military. Air Force Commander Maj Gen John Mugaravai Omenda, has been promoted to Lieutenant General and appointed as the Vice Chief of Defence Forces (VCDF).

Maj-Gen Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed has been assigned to the Kenya Air Force as its Commander, becoming the first woman to head any armed forces service. Similarly, Maj Gen Paul Owuor Otieno has been appointed as the Commander of the Kenyan Navy.

Maj General Thomas Njoroge Ng'ang'a has been posted to the National Defence University, assuming the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration and Finance role.

Furthermore, Brigadier Peter Nyamu Githinji has been promoted to the rank of Major General and appointed as the Senior Directing Staff, Air at the National Defence College.

Brigadier Jattani Kampare Gula and Brigadier George Okumu have also been elevated to Major General, assuming crucial roles as the Managing Directors of the Kenya Meat Commission and Kenya Ordnance Factories Corporation and Food Processing Factory, respectively.

Brigadier Samuel Kosgei Kipkorir has been appointed Deputy Commander of the Kenya Air Force.
