President Ruto has announced that 10,000 electric Bodabodas will be available to replace the fuel driven ones from September this year. Ruto was speaking during the launch of the Bodaboda care in KICC, Nairobi on June 26, 2023.

According to the president, there will be an introduction of a cheaper electricity tariff for charging stations; the maximum amount charged being 8 shillings. The introduction of electric Bodabodas he says will reduce fuel consumption on Kenyan roads, thereby reducing the amount of money used to import petroleum fuels.

“We use 60 billion shillings on fuel every month. We want to reduce the amount of foreign exchange we use to import petroleum products by making sure we transition from fossil powered motorcycles to electric motor vehicles and motorcycles,” Ruto said.

Ruto also said that 100,000 electric Bodabodas are expected to be available in the country by the end of the year.

The launch of the Bodaboda Care will see 116,000 boda boda riders getting free NHIF family cover immediately as well as training and licences for Bodaboda to come down from sh. 8,000 to 2,500.
