Francis Atwoli, the Secretary General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU), has expressed his support for President William Ruto's stance on the issue of the high cost of living in Kenya.

Atwoli made these remarks during his speech at the 6th Annual Editors' Convention in Mombasa on Saturday, December 2, 2023.

In his address, he emphasized the importance of understanding the realities of the situation and the need for collective responsibility in addressing this pressing concern.

He highlighted that many people are voicing their frustrations about the rising prices of essential goods and services, which have significantly impacted their day-to-day lives.

“I hear people crying about the high cost of living. Ruto was clear during the campaigns that he would build this country with ‘mama mbogas’. When he now asks Kenyans to assist in building the country, they start ranting,” he said.

Atwoli emphasized the need for collective responsibility when building the country and addressing the challenges associated with the high cost of living.

"Sasa ukiambiwa leta mbao, leta jembe, let vitu tujenge hii serikali unarudi nyuma unasema heri tungepigia Raila Odinga. (When you are told to bring wood and a plough to help build the country, you go back and start saying you should have voted for Raila Odinga)."

He expressed his disappointment at the negative reactions from some Kenyans when asked by President Ruto to contribute to the nation's development.

Atwoli argued that certain aspects of the situation cannot be changed immediately, and citizens must accept this truth and actively participate in finding solutions.

“There are some things you cannot change. This is the truth, and we must accept,” he added.
