• As the Jubilee Party flagbearer, this appointment gives Matiang’i the home base security every presidential contender needs.
On February 23, 2026, Dr. Fred Matiang’i was officially ordained as the Gusii Community Spokesperson.

The event took place at the Ekerenyo Grounds in Nyamira County, following a rally by the United Alternative Government that swept through Kisii and Nyamira. For many, this was not just a local appointment; it was the formal coronation of the Jubilee Party’s presidential flagbearer as the undisputed leader of his backyard.

The rally at Ekerenyo was not just a Gusii affair. It served as a massive show of force for the United Opposition.

The presence of other leaders signaled that Matiang’i’s new role has the full backing of a formidable coalition. Among them was Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper Patriotic Front party leader), Eugene Wamalwa, Democratic Action Party-Kenya party leader (DAP-K), Rigathi Gachagua, Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) party leader, George Natembeya (Trans Nzoia Governor), Millicent Omanga (Aspiring Women Rep ,Nairobi County) and Peter Munya (Party of National Unity (PNU) leader).

Dr. Matiang’i, known for his uncompromising approach during his tenure as Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS), has successfully transitioned from a technocrat to a grassroots political leader.

By accepting the spokesperson role, he follows in the footsteps of legendary Gusii leaders like the late Simeon Nyachae, positioning himself as the primary negotiator for the community's interests at the national table.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) account shortly after the ceremony,  Matiang’i shared his gratitude:

"Truly honored and thankful. This is a responsibility I embrace with pride. This is more than a position—it is a call to leadership and a mandate to unite our people under a clear agenda of representation, empowerment, and transformative progress."
