September 15, 2025 marks the 18th International Day Of Democracy that’s held since 2007.
To commemorate the event, the United Nations Democratic Fund hosted an event titled ‘From Voice to Action’ at its Headquarters in New York, marking 20 years of the UN Democracy Fund (UNDEF).
According to UNDEF, it seeks to highlight how democratic participation can be transformed from voice to action.
“Democracy is powered by the will of the people – by their voices, their choices and their participation” United Nations Secretary General António Guterres said in a speech.
In Kenya, the African Youth Café in partnership with ForumCiv, is hosting a local forum at the University of Nairobi under the theme ‘Reclaiming Space, Reimagining Democracy’
According to Youth Café, this is a space to reflect on Kenyans democratic journey, amplify youth voices and promote inclusive civic participation. The non-governmental organization highlights the following as the expectations of activism, performances exhibitions, high level panel discussions and interactive dialogues.
The day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 through resolution A/62/7. This coincides with the anniversary of The Universal Declaration on Democracy adopted by The International Parliamentary Union in 1997. This day encourages governments of countries to create public awareness on issues democracy.
It also allows them to emphasize on democratic values such as freedom and genuine election practices as well as human rights. It highlights challenges facing democracy and solutions to them. Also promoting good governance, monitoring of elections and supports civil society efforts.
Different countries all over the world celebrate in efforts to fulfil todays day as well as discuss on issues that will later affect them.
