• The County Government of Nairobi is spending 1.2 billion on the Feeding Programme, which is the largest by a city in Africa.

Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja has turned emotional while delivering his speech during the Launch of the 10th Kitchen of the Nairobi Feeding Programme dubbed ‘Dishi na Kaunti’ on June 20, 2023.

The Governor sympathises with Nairobi school going children, saying they deserve a descent education like the rest.

Speaking during the launch, Sakaja says that something must be done for the children of Nairobi.

“Successive governments have done bad for the children of Nairobi. There are only 2-10 schools in Nairobi, which accommodates a population of 5million people. Our Children who are not in public schools are not in expensive private academies. They are in Alternative Provision of Basic Education and Training, where a school serves different functions aside from offering education,” Sakaja said.

The County Government of Nairobi is spending 1.2 billion on the Feeding Programme, which is the largest by a city in Africa.

The Governor says the Feeding Programme is important for a Nairobi Child since he understands the challenges that they go through in order to survive staying in school without food.

According to the Governor, Nairobi residents go through the same hardships as those in the ASAL communities and that something should be done about it.

“Our children are losing a third of their education when they are told during lunch time to go find food and they don’t come back to class. When they come back the next day, they can’t catch up with what was taught the day before,” added the Governor.

Sakaja admits that the people of Nairobi have been ignored by interventions.

“Usually, interventions on hunger and marginalization ignore Nairobi, because it is assumed people in Nairobi have money. Urban poverty bites harder in the city,” said Sakaja.

The County Government of Nairobi chose a network of schools of Central Kitchen where one kitchen serves a number of schools around it.

In Starehe Constituency, the urban kitchen will be in Racecourse primary, Makadara Constituency; Bidii primary, Kasarani Constituency; Njiru Primary, Embakasi South Constituency; Kwa Njenga Primary, Embakasi Central Constituency; Kawele One primary, Dagoretti North Constituency; Muthangari Primary, Kibra; Toi Primary, Westlands; Frasi Lane and Ruaraka; Baba Dogo primary.
