President William Ruto has conveyed a message of condolence to the Government and people of Nigeria following the passing of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari.

In a statement on his official X account on July 14, 2025, President Ruto has described Buhari as a visionary leader whose influence extended well beyond Nigeria’s borders.

“On behalf of the Government and People of the Republic of Kenya, I extend our deepest and heartfelt condolences to Your Excellency, the Government and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria upon the passing of H.E. President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR,” President Ruto said.

The president has paid tribute to Buhari’s legacy as a staunch advocate of good governance, regional security, and economic integration across Africa. He has noted that Buhari’s tenure was marked by decisive action against corruption, efforts to counter terrorism, and support for the continent’s development agenda.

“President Buhari demise is a loss not only to the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria but also to the entire African Continent, which has been immeasurably enriched by his wisdom and steadfast commitment to the liberation and prosperity of the Nigerian people,” Ruto added.

The Kenyan leader has also recalled Buhari’s State Visit to Nairobi in January 2016, describing it as a milestone in strengthening ties between Kenya and Nigeria. During that visit, both countries signed cooperation agreements in areas including trade, security, and cultural exchange.

Ruto has further expressed personal gratitude for Buhari’s message of congratulations in August 2022 following his election as Kenya’s fifth president—a gesture he said reflected Buhari’s dedication to democratic values and the enduring friendship between the two nations.

“In this time of grief, Kenya stands in solidarity with the Government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement continued. “May the legacy of President Buhari continue to inspire all of us in our pursuit of peace, dignity, and shared prosperity across Africa,” Ruto concluded.
