On Tuesday night, the Netherlands delivered a dominant performance in their World Cup qualifying campaign, overwhelming Malta 8–0 at the Euroborg Stadium, marking their second consecutive victory in Group G.

Virgil van Dijk followed up with an impressive strike from afar, extending the lead to 3–0 just 20 minutes into the match.

The Dutch maintained their superiority in the second half, with Xavi Simons, Noa Lang, Donyell Malen (who scored twice), and Micky van de Ven rounding off the scoring. Malta failed to generate a single shot on target and were thoroughly outplayed for the duration of the match.

Coach Ronald Koeman took advantage of the situation to rotate his lineup, giving rest to several players who were carrying yellow cards in anticipation of a vital game against Poland in September. Despite the changes, the Oranje showcased fluid attacking play and nearly total ball control, underscoring their squad's depth and tactical unity.

Depay's landmark performance stood out on a night reminiscent of the Netherlands' historic 8–0 win over Malta in 1990. This victory also significantly improved the team's goal difference, which could be crucial in a tightly contested qualifying group.

With six points from two games, the Netherlands currently lead Group G alongside Poland, who also boast a flawless start. Malta finds itself at the bottom of the standings without a goal or a point.

After the match, Koeman commended his team’s intensity and professionalism: “We demonstrated today that we can uphold high standards, no matter the opponent. Goals came from various positions on the field — that’s exactly what we aim for.”

The Netherlands will next take on Poland in September, a match that is likely to decide the group leader. Malta will continue their campaign with a home match against Lithuania as they seek their first points.
