On May 8, 2025, the new era of Pope Leo the XIV started. Robert F. Prevost Leo was born in 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Pope Leo's election marks history as he is the first U.S- Born Pope. Only cardinals under the age of 80 years were eligible to vote.

President William Ruto has hailed the new Pope saying, “May your papacy be a shining light of love, hope, and compassion; may it uplift the poor, give voice to the voiceless, heal divisions, and steadfastly champion peace, justice, and the sanctity of human dignity around the world.”

Other leaders including KANU leader Gideon Moi have also shared their messages saying, ”We congratulate Pope Leo XIV on becoming the Point and the new head of the Roman Catholic Church after two days of the Conclave at the Vatican. It is our hope that he will serve humanity with kindness, love and grace. May his papacy be a moment of spiritual renewal for the Catholic faithful’s across the world.” 

The voting of the new Pope began on May 6, 2025, in the Sistine Chapel at the Apostolic Palace in Vatican City. Signaled by a white smoke, which means that the new pope has been found, Pope Leo emerged victorious after receiving two-thirds majority of the votes.

Following the death of Pope Francis, which happened on April 21, 2025, at the age of 88, Francis was hospitalized for double pneumonia and respiratory complications, which he later succumbed, the cardinals started the Voting process, which is done in secret using paper ballots.

The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, also took to his X account to offer his message:

“My heartfelt congratulations to His Holiness Pope Leo XIV and Catholics around the world. Our world is in need of the strongest voices for peace, social justice, human dignity & compassion. I look forward to building on the long legacy of cooperation between the United Nations and the Holy See to advance solidarity, foster reconciliation & build a just and sustainable world for all.”
