2025 marks 80 years since the Second World War came to a halt. It also marks the 8th anniversary of the United Nations (UN).
 
May 8th -9th of every year are special dates in the UN General Assembly and is marked as a day of reconciliation and remembrance as member states observe either one or both of these days as homage to the victims of the Second World War.

On March 2, 2010, the General Assembly mandated its member states, all UN organizations, NGO’s and individuals to pay their tribute to the victims of the Second World War during the dates mentioned. A special General Assembly meeting was held during the second week of May 2010 in commemoration of the victims.

During the 2020 United Nations General Assembly, the United Nations Secretary General said, “At this time of remembrance and reconciliation, we pay tribute to those people who lost their lives in The Second World War. We never forget the grave crimes committed by the Nazis."

The victory in May 1945 marked the beginning of a new era.
