Catholic Christians from Kakamega Diocese in Kakamega County have embarked on a remarkable journey, spanning over 260 kilometres, to the Subukia Shrine in Nakuru County for national prayers.

Setting out on foot, these devoted individuals express their faith and commitment, considering themselves pilgrims emulating the path of Christ.

The Christians started their journey from Kakamega on September 26, 2023, taking different breaks along the way.

"We are all on a journey, and the Christians want to nurture that spirituality. We chose to walk from Kakamega because of the need to emulate Christ,” one of the Christians said.

The pilgrimage to Subukia Shrine holds deep spiritual significance for the Catholic community, fostering faith, appreciating the work of missionaries, and contributing to the evangelization and unity of believers.

The Catholic Christians undertaking this pilgrimage view the Church as a pilgrim Church, constantly pursuing spiritual growth and connection with the divine. By embarking on this arduous journey, they seek to nurture their spirituality and emulate Christ's journey of sacrifice and devotion.

The spiritual walk to Subukia Shrine serves as a means to strengthen faith and deepen the believers' appreciation for the work of the first missionaries. It offers an opportunity for reflection, prayer, and fellowship as they come together to build the kingdom of God.

Through this pilgrimage, they recognize the importance of unity, evangelism, and mutual support in their shared faith journey.

The prayers held at Subukia Shrine on October 7, 2023, are part of the national prayer day organized by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB). This significant event brings Catholic Christians from across the country together in a collective act of worship, seeking spiritual renewal and communal solidarity.

Subukia Shrine is situated in Subukia village, Bahati sub-county in Nakuru County, and holds excellent reverence among the Catholic community. Nestled atop a hill, it is considered a holy site and a place of peace and worship.

Originating as a community church, the shrine has grown in significance over the years, symbolizing the deep faith and devotion of the Catholic community in the region.
