The former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati has passed away.
Chebukati was appointed as IEBC Chairperson on a six-year tenure in January 2017 by then-President Uhuru Kenyatta where he oversaw three significant elections: the 2017 general election, the October 2017 presidential rerun, and the 2022 general election.
On January 17, 2023, he retired, making history as the first IEBC chairperson to serve a full term. Chebukati, who was born in Bungoma County, studied law at the University of Nairobi before graduating from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology with a Master of Business Administration.
He established the Nairobi-based legal practice Cootow & Associates Advocates in 2006 prior to his time at the IEBC. He entered politics in 2007 and ran for the Orange Democratic Movement's parliamentary seat in the Saboti Constituency, losing to Hon. Luyai and Caleb Amis.
He received the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH), Kenya's second-highest civilian honor, in recognition of his service at the 59th Jamhuri Day celebrations, which took place at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi
