- She commended the efforts to combat femicide, defilement, and teenage pregnancies
Parents have been called upon to take proactive measures in monitoring their children's digital activities to shield them from online risks. Nakuru Woman Representative, Liza Chelule has emphasized the need for parental control on digital devices during the distribution of NGAAF bursary cheques worth Ksh 10 million to students from 11 sub-counties in Nakuru.
Chelule highlighted the internet's double-edged nature, noting that while it bridges educational gaps and fosters digital learning for African children, it also exposes them to dangers like sexual exploitation and cyberbullying, which continues to hinder their holistic growth. She urged parents to remain vigilant and guide their children toward consuming appropriate and beneficial content online.
"There is so much online, uncontrolled adult content, and cyberbullying; such issues are very rampant. Parents and even spiritual leaders have a significant role to play in keeping these young people safe," said Chelule.
In the fight against gender-based violence, Chelule lauded the creation of a multi-sectoral task force to address femicide and called on Kenyans to give the initiative time to implement measures for lasting solutions. She reaffirmed her commitment to combating defilement and teenage pregnancies, which disproportionately affect the girl child.
"Although we already have a board responsible for GBV, we still need to support them. It's not just about that commission alone. All of us should address the issue of femicide. It is becoming so painful, and we cannot be silent about this," she added.
