The Healthcare crisis has been averted after the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentist Union(KMPDU)called off their planned strike. This decision follows successful negotiations addressing grievances tied to the 2017 Collective Bargain Agreement(CBA), bringing relief to doctors.
The strike initially set to begin on December 22, 2024, had threatened to disrupt healthcare services across the country.
The resolution comes after intense negotiations between the doctors' union, the Ministry of Health, and the Council of Governors, and was spearheaded by Deputy President Professor Kithure Kindiki.

Speaking during the meeting convened at the DP’s residence in Karen, Wajir governor and the Chairperson of the Council of Governors said that the remaining balance will be paid by July 2025.

The agreement also includes a plan for comprehensive salary adjustments which will be implemented in the 2025/2026 financial year. Any remaining adjustments from these arrears will also be cleared during this period.
“We assure KMPDU that the remaining parts of any agreement including the adjustments that we said will push to 2025/2026 will be adhered to and convened,” Governor Ahmed Abdullahi stated.
This resolution is a significant relief for both doctors and the public. The planned strike had raised serious concerns about the state of the healthcare sector which has struggled with industrial action time and again.
