Chelsea has been displaying a classical mode of play, acquiring significant wins in all competitions, affirming they are on a mission. In a thrilling match played at St Mary's Stadium, Southampton's home ground, the Blues shined by humiliating the already struggling team at the bottom of the English Premier League (EPL) 5-1.
The win stands to be essential for the second position Chelsea to close the massive gap with the rival leading Liverpool. Axel Disasi, Christopher Nkunku, Noni Madueke' Cole Palmer and Jadon Sancho scored brilliant goals to give Chelsea a comfortable lead.
In the 7th minute, Axel Disasi scored a goal from a brilliant corner; barely 4 minutes later, Joe Aribo equalized for the hosts and brought them back into the game. Their joy was short-lived as 7 minutes later, in the 17th minute, Southampton got punished from their back play slightly outside their 18-yard box. They lost the ball as they tried to pass, and Nkunku made a brilliant shot, finding an empty goal line.
The third goal came in the 34th minute as Chelsea took control when Joao Felix passed to Madueke out wide on the edge of the area, who cut inside before firing his shot into the far bottom corner, leaving the goalkeeper with fewer options to save the ball.
The host fell shot in the 39th minute as their defender Stephens' was shown a red card after he pulled Cucurella's hair at a corner kick.
Chelsea returned for the second half by creating chances after chances, with Cole Palmer and Jadon Sancho's goals in the second half.
In other EPl matches, Everton dusted their dust off by thrashing the Wolves 4-0 with two own goals. Liverpool met a hard rock Newcastle in a trilled match which led to a 3-3 craw giving its competitors hopes to catch up at the top of the table
