Following the Law Society of Kenya's enrolment of the toll-free number on June 19, 2024, it’s evident that many Kenyans have reached out for legal assistance. The Law Society of Kenya President, Faith Odhiambo, reports that on July 17, 2023, they camped at Central Police Station until 9 pm. This was in response to the numerous distress calls received through the toll-free number (0800-720-434) by several protestors who were arrested during the demonstrations.
Despite holding a long discussion with the Officer Commanding Station (OCS) over their release, the OCS did not accede to releasing them immediately but decided to hold them overnight with claims of enabling their booking before setting them free this morning.
Upon reporting this morning to further follow up on their release, the President of the Law Society of Kenya has shown dissatisfaction with the charges booked against the protesters.
“This morning, we reported to the Central Police Station by 8 am to follow up on the release. We were shocked to find that the peaceful protesters were booked with trumped-up charges of mugging. The police have offered no qualification of these allegations, and we therefore demand that @ODPP KE desist from allowing vexatious, false charges against the people of Kenya,” she said, additionally pledging to defend all the protesters arrested when they shall be arraigned in court.
She has proudly congratulated all the Law Society teams in the 23 counties where demonstrations have been reported for working with diligence against unlawful detention of protesters. The team has secured the release of protesters in Kitengela, Kahawa, and Mombasa and promised to be alert to always offer needful legal interventions. In her statement, she has called on members of the public to continue keeping them abreast with the information for their quick action.
