- CBC presents us with a stellar opportunity to revolutionize sports in Kenya by nurturing talent early and providing structured pathways.
The Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) was first introduced in Kenya in 2017. This was an education system that replaced the 8-4-4 system with a 2-6-3-3 model.
The main emphasis of this new education system is creativity, skills development, and practical learning rather than the memorization. Learners who struggled with the academic based curriculum have a lee way into sports.
Sports plays a crucial role in the development of a child. In CBC, sports are embedded in the curriculum through Physical Education (PE) and sports as a core subject in lower primary.
When the student joins junior school between grades 7-10, a child gets the chance to choose a specific pathway. A pathway is a specialized area of study that learners choose based on their interests, talents and career aspirations.
Talent development pathways include Arts and Sports Science. They can further specialize their area of interest in senior secondary in grade s10-12. Learners also have a chance to compete in games, athletics and other competitions.
This means that assessment will be based on practical skills of the learner rather than just theory.
This will be beneficial for our sports industry in Kenya since there will be early identification of talent. Young athletes will be nurtured from an early age. Additionally, learners can be able to pursue career pathways.
What this means is that a learner can be able to chase a sport professionally through specialized tracks. Moreover, CBC reduces exam pressure. Unlike the 8-4-4 system, CBC allows students to reign supreme in sports without over emphasis on academics.
Just to wind up my argument, the CBC presents us with a stellar opportunity to revolutionize sports in Kenya by nurturing talent early and providing structured pathways.
If well implemented, Kenya could see a golden age of dominance not only in athletics but also in football, basketball, rugby and any other sport on the global stage.
