This week marks a significant transition for the African Union Commission(AUC) as it prepares to elect a new chairperson, succeeding Moussa Faki Mahammat of Chad.

The elections will take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on February 15 and 16, 2025, with the newly elected chairperson needing to secure the backing of two-thirds of the 55 eligible voting nations, underscoring the collaborative spirit required at the helm of the continent's premier political body.

Three prominent candidates are vying for the esteemed position: Raila Odinga, the former Prime Minister of Kenya and; Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, Djibouti’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; and Richard Randriamandrato, Madagascar’s former Minister of Foreign Affairs.
