The United States of America (USA) is considered the world's most powerful country, both economically and militarily. The leadership of the country is important not only to its citizens but also to people across the world. Those in command influence the global powers, economy, and political decisions of countries, especially in Africa.
As the USA heads to elections on November 5, 2024, a heavily contested campaign between Former President Donald Trump of the Republican Party and Kamala Harris of the Democrats has made it hard to predict who is possibly to win.
Clearly, Africa has not been a priority in their campaign agendas. The candidates have addressed their relationship with other superpower countries, such as Russia and China, leaving Africa out of the picture.
Trump is known for being unproblematic with Russian President Vladimir Putin. If Trump clinches to power, it's said he will support Russia in its war against Ukraine. He will abolish Ukraine's plans to join NATO, unlike Harris, who, like the incumbent government, will support Ukraine militarily against Russia. Moreover, during his first term in office, Trump was said to have reduced financing for NATO.
However, both of the candidates have declared their support to Israel in their war against Palestine and Iran. They have both promised to give military weapons and funding to Israel. Moreover, on issues to do with China, both candidates are seen to be preparing for an economic war with China after assuming power.
Additionally, Africa has been given less attention on the ongoing campaign agenda across the country. If Trump clinches to power, he will reduce the financing of African states. On May 23, 2024, President Ruto, on a state visit to the USA, Kenya, was given a non-NATO status, which was to see military assistance in Kenya. This is said to be a dream if Trump clinches into power on November 5, 2024.
The Democrats and Republicans go head to head. It's still the hope of Americans that the government will solve the increasing inflation and secure a brighter future for all Americans.
