- There is a sudden change of events as the church has now turned critic barely two years since William Ruto ascended to power.
- Things have escalated, especially with the Deputy President's Impeachment case. Recently, Rev. Teresia Wairimu, who was known for her prayers towards William Ruto during campaigns, has retaliated, claiming this is not the Godly government they elected.
The church is said to have played a pivotal role in the 2022 general elections. This was the first time since the second liberation that the church was seen engaged in politics.
During the second liberation, the church was actively involved in the struggle and demanded constitutional amendments. Clergy such as Bishop Ndingi Mwana-Nzeki, and Rev. Timothy Njoya, among others were involved. These gallant men were not left untouched as police beat Rev. Timothy Njoya to the point of being in a coma, while Bishop Alexander Muge died in a strange accident. Despite all these, the church achieved its goals in the struggle.
In what has been seen as a replica of 1990 to 2002, in the 2022 campaigns, the church's influence was felt across the political domain, with most of the church leaders declaring publicly their support for William Ruto's candidature. William Ruto's campaigns were based on the pulpit, where he also donated a huge amount of cash as offerings, which led to much criticism from his competitors.
Political analyst Patrick Oloo notes the difference in numbers between the two leading presidential candidates was small, and definitely, the church had a deciding hand. "Ruto managed to present himself as a Christian and churches have embraced him as a Christian on the other hand he managed to paint baba as an antichristian," said Oloo.
However, there is a sudden change of events as the church has now turned critic barely two years since William Ruto ascended to power. Things have escalated, especially with the Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's impeachment case. Recently, Rev. Teresia Wairimu, who was known for her prayers towards William Ruto during campaigns, has retaliated, claiming this is not the Godly government they elected.
