For about a fortnight, the news of the impeachment of Kenya’s Deputy President has owned the spotlight with enthralling headlines across various media platforms. The outplayed efforts of media to inform and educate have caught the DP’s eye and consequently printed a smile on his face, despite the furrowing brow amidst his impeachment motion.

On almost all occasions, state officers resent the media. They see the fourth estate as a ticking time bomb which, if it blows, would expose their “dirty laundry” and see them out of office either immediately or gradually.

Barely a day before availing to the House, Mr. Rigathi Gachagua felt the urge to air a good word for the raw conduct of media. But why?

Gachagua has thanked the media for its fearless coverage of his impeachment motion from the ground up. He has pointed to the fact that the whole public participation process was sloppy and out of play.

“I want to thank you for the coverage of the shoddy public participation on this impeachment motion because you exposed it for what it was. Your video clips are very useful to us as we argue in the courts of Law. You are good people,” he said.

The DP has taken the admiration a notch by referring to media practitioners as wonderful people. Coming from a state officer who stares at the reality of leaving office, the question of “how convenient” lingers and assumes a very concentrated form.

At this time, DP Rigathi Gachagua has shed light on the media's efforts to keep corruption and dictatorship in check. He says, “We would have so much impunity and we would go back to dictatorship without the media. I encourage you to continue being the watchdog on behalf of the people of Kenya.”

Looking into the uncertain future ahead of him, Gachagua has pleaded with the Members of Parliament (MPs) to focus on the corruption scandals ailing the country. He has aligned his claims with the controversial Adani deal and issues within the public health sector.

The former Mathira MP has encouraged the media to continue pointing the limelight at him to ensure the public is in the loop at all times, but with a request that, he be rendered the right of response.

“Please continue writing. Where Rigathi Gachagua has gone wrong, please write. But always accord me the right of reply,” Gachagua noted.
