Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura has come out swinging against political leaders whom he accuses of being in “denial” about the depth of support President William Ruto still commands across the Mt Kenya region.

According to Mwaura, the President’s admirers may not be loud but they are many, silent, and scattered across villages, waiting for the right moment to make their voices heard.

“If Azimio could get the votes they got in the region in 2022, many people will be shocked at the numbers the President will get in 2027,” Mwaura said.

He insists that Ruto has already made strides in turning around an economy that was “on its knees” when he took office. For Mwaura, the silence in Mt Kenya isn’t apathy it’s strategy.

 “Time will tell,” he added.

But not everyone is convinced. The online response has been swift and sharp.

“Let the BETA manifesto be implemented. A lot should be improved—youth summits, youth innovations, supporting youths in business across Kenya, just to mention a few.”

“‘Many silent admirers’ is euphemism for denial of reality on the ground. 2027 mutashagaa.”

The Mt Kenya region, which includes counties like Nyeri, Murang’a, Kiambu, and Meru was instrumental in Ruto’s 2022 win.

The region contributed nearly two-thirds of his total votes, despite being the political base of then-President Uhuru Kenyatta, who had thrown his weight behind the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga and the Azimio coalition.

The shift was widely seen as a political rebellion, a rejection of Uhuru’s influence and an embrace of Ruto’s “hustler” narrative, which promised economic empowerment and bottom-up transformation.

With Mt Kenya accounting for roughly 26% of Kenya’s registered voters, Ruto’s dominance in the region gave him the crucial edge to cross the 50% threshold and avoid a runoff.
