The African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship elections held on February 15, 2025, have ignited a political spark that has shaken the country. Throughout Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s campaign, there was tremendous support from President William Ruto and his administration, a fact the President made very clear on numerous occasions.

“We confirmed that we had the right candidate with the right credentials to be able to champion the unity, the progress and the success of Africa as a continent.” President Ruto said while in Siaya County for the Piny Luo Cultural Festival on January 2, 2025.

Hon. Raila’s win could have marked a significant diplomatic milestone for Kenya. However, his decision to withdraw from the election now begs a much different question: What are his plans?

Everyone is awaiting Raila Odinga’s next steps, which is giving way to speculation. Will he align himself with the Kenya Kwanza government or resume his status as opposition leader?

While speaking to the media, Belgut MP Nelson Koech says, “We will have to find a structure that will accommodate Hon. Raila Odinga to continue doing his job.” Interpretively, this statement could insinuate a future alliance with the current government.
