The world of reggae music is mourning the loss of one of its icons, Peter Anthony Morgan, better known as Peetah Morgan, the lead singer of the Grammy-winning band Morgan Heritage.

He died on Sunday, February 25, 2024, at the age of 46, according to a statement from his family.

Peetah Morgan was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Jamaican reggae legend Denroy Morgan, who inspired him and his siblings to pursue music early on.

He formed Morgan Heritage with four of his brothers and sisters in 1994, and they soon became one of the most popular and respected reggae bands in the world, blending roots, dancehall, R&B, and hip-hop influences.

Morgan Heritage released 13 studio albums, including the 2016 Grammy winner for best reggae album, Strictly Roots.

Some of their most famous songs include “Down by the River”, “Don’t Haffi Dread”, “She’s Still Loving Me”, and “I’m Coming Home”, which featured Peetah Morgan’s soulful and distinctive vocals.

Peetah Morgan was also a successful solo artist, releasing several singles and collaborating with other artists, such as India. Arie, Buju Banton, and Beres Hammond.

He was known for his positive and uplifting messages, social and spiritual consciousness, and love for Africa, where he performed and supported various causes.

Peetah Morgan’s death has shocked and saddened his fans, friends, and fellow musicians, who have paid tribute to him on social media and in the press.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness called him a “colossal loss” for Jamaica and reggae music and praised his “incredible talent and contribution to the genre”.

Zimbabwean musician Jah Prayzah said he was “heartbroken” by the news and remembered Peetah Morgan as a “brother and mentor” who helped him in his career.

Nigerian singer Patoranking said he was “devastated” by the loss of his “idol and inspiration” and thanked him for his “music and legacy”.

Peetah Morgan is survived by his wife, his children, his parents, and his siblings, who have asked for privacy and prayers during this difficult time.

He will be remembered as a reggae legend, a loving family man, and a humanitarian who left behind a rich and lasting musical legacy that will continue to inspire future generations.

Rest in peace, Peetah Morgan. Everything’s going to be alright.
