• The rise in toll fees for the Nairobi Expressway has led to a noticeable increase in the cost of using the expressway.

The recent increase in toll fees for the Nairobi Expressway has prompted the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport, Kipchumba Murkomen, to encourage motorists to consider alternative routes.

The Kenyan government implemented a significant toll fee hike, raising charges from $2.29 to $3.18. While the adjustment aims to align toll charges with currency fluctuations, concerns have arisen among motorists.

The rise in toll fees for the Nairobi Expressway has led to a noticeable increase in the cost of using the expressway.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen explained that the adjustment was made in accordance with the project agreement, taking into account the depreciation of the Kenyan shilling against the United States dollar since the toll rates were gazetted in April 2022.

“The good thing about the Nairobi expressway is that first the government of Kenya did not give traffic volume guarantee otherwise the taxpayer would now be paying a lot from the interest accrued and inflation plus the difference unmet by less traffic flow. Second, the consumer has an alternative route that that is not tolled,” said Murkomen.
