- The senator has called for a thorough investigation into the Sacco's operations and financial dealings over the past four years to hold accountable those responsible for any misappropriation of funds.
Kirinyaga Senator James Kamau Murango has sought the assistance of detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to uncover the truth behind the abrupt closure of a Sacco that held the life savings of his 6000 constituents.
The Senator has called for a thorough investigation into the Sacco's operations and financial dealings over the past four years to hold accountable those responsible for any misappropriation of funds.
In addition, he has reached out to the Cooperatives and SMEs Cabinet Secretary, Simon Chelugui, to intervene in the matter, as allegations suggest that approximately Ksh.19.4 million may have been misappropriated.
The Sacco in question reportedly catered to coffee farmers working in three local factories. It opened its doors in 2021 but temporarily closed before reopening in 2013, subsequently operating until reports of financial troubles came to light.
The concerns regarding the Sacco's financial health were revealed in an inspection report compiled by the office of the Director of Cooperatives in Kirinyaga County. Following member complaints, an investigation was initiated to assess the organization's financial status.

As news of the financial struggles spread, members of the Sacco staged a protest at its offices, hoping to obtain satisfactory answers. Unfortunately, their efforts were met with disappointment, as the members discovered the following day that the Sacco's offices had been closed.
A notice posted on the door did not explain the indefinite closure, leaving members worried about losing their savings, shares, and assets. Additionally, employees faced the stark possibility of losing their jobs.
"A notice had been pinned on the door informing them that the Sacco had been closed indefinitely with no reason for the closure being shown on the notice," the Senator said.
Expressing concern for those affected by this unfortunate situation, Senator James Kamau Murango penned a letter seeking assistance and intervention to prevent the Sacco from collapsing.
He implored the Cooperatives and SMEs Cabinet Secretary, Simon Chelugui, to take action to protect the members' savings and livelihoods, emphasizing the potential consequences of the Sacco's demise.
"I write to you as a concerned representative of all those affected by this tragedy, seeking your assistance and intervention to save this Sacco from going under, which would mean a loss of the members' savings and a risk to many lives and livelihood," he pleaded.
The senator also called upon the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to safeguard the interests of the Sacco's 6000 members and protect their savings.
