Every January 24, the world comes together to celebrate the International Day of Education. This year, the theme is “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.”

This theme invites us to reflect on the transformative power of education in enabling individuals and communities to navigate, understand, and influence the rapid technological advancements shaping our lives.

The day was established to underscore the vital role of education in fostering peace and development. In December 2018, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted this initiative, recognizing that education is fundamental for achieving global peace and sustainable development.

The inaugural celebration took place just a month later, on January 24, 2019. Since then, the observance has grown, with 59 member countries pledging to celebrate the day annually.

In a statement released for this year's celebration, the Ministry of Education, Julius Ogamba, emphasized the importance of education in shaping a brighter future for all Kenyans.

“On this International Education Day, let us celebrate the transformative power of education in shaping a brighter future for all Kenyans. As we embrace the advancements of technology, let us ensure that human values remain at the heart of our creativity and learning journey,” the Ministry said through a post on X.
